The Hong Kong Prize for Excellence in Science and Technology

The Hongkong Prize recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing science and technology since 2022, when it was established by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation. Since its inception, winners of this award have demonstrated excellence in research, innovation and creativity while contributing to economic development within Hong Kong city limits. Originally given out by universities both locally and in China as well as companies involved with technology or industry related work; nowadays it has also been awarded to scientists from these sectors working at companies.

On Friday night at the annual Hong Kong News Awards ceremony hosted by Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, South China Morning Post’s editorial and design teams won 12 prizes at this year’s ceremony, taking first place in four categories. Senior reporter Edith Lin and her team won first prize in best scoop category with their investigation of unauthorised structures added to luxury property, photographer Lam Yu-cheung won top honour in news photography category, while senior designer Mok Kwok-cheong earned merit award in news page design section.

Ng Siew Chien was recognized in the Life and Science category for developing noninvasive tests to detect early diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract diseases and autism spectrum disorders. She was joined by Zhang Hua who made breakthroughs in nanomaterial phase engineering and 3D micro- and nanofabrication; Wang Cong who pioneered innovative data and AI security technologies; Chai Yang who contributed disruptive in-sensor computing paradigms for artificial vision sensors; as well as fellow laureates Zhang Hua (breakthroughs in phase engineering nanomaterials); Chai Yang also made important contributions that made breakthroughs in nanofabrication breakthroughs – feats which she accomplished alongside fellow laureates Zhang Hua who made breakthroughs in phase engineering of nanomaterials; Wang Cong who developed innovative data security technologies; Wang Cong (who pioneered innovative data security technologies); Chai Yang contributed disruptive in-sensor computing paradigms for artificial vision sensors; while Chai Yang made groundbreaking contributions towards artificial vision sensors (reinvention).

The Hong Kong Philharmonic also took home three prizes in the Music and Dance category, winning first place for its concert tour with Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle that took four years to plan and execute, and merit awards for recording works by Chinese composers Li Hongyi and Wang Fei; additionally Diocesan Girls’ School’s recording on “The Trembling Ground” received special mention.
